Glass reinforced polymer (GRP) grating offers excellent slip resistance and long-term durability in harsh, wet or chemically aggressive environments. It is a proven solution for industrial walkways, platforms, access routes and service areas where safety, corrosion resistance and low maintenance are essential.
At Barclay & Mathieson, we supply a comprehensive range of GRP grating types, from AutoGrate high-strength open mesh to mini-mesh, solid top, and smooth top options. All our GRP grating can be supplied as standard panels or cut to size, and is manufactured to comply and adhere with British Standards BS EN ISO 14122: Permanent Means of Access to Machinery and BS 4592: Flooring and Stair Treads for Industrial Use.
We’re here to help specifiers and contractors select the most effective product for their project, whether as an individual component or part of a complete fabricated solution. Call us on 0114 254 3220.
Three surface finishes are available: natural concave; gritted; and sanded.
Our natural concave finish provides a general anti-slip surface, ideal for areas where a non-gritted surface is preferred such as food preparation areas. Where high slip resistance is essential, our grating is gritted with silicon carbide and proven through independent pendulum testing to offer a low slip risk (PTV 36+). A flat, sanded finish is available on request.

AutoGrate is Barclay & Mathieson’s premium moulded GRP open mesh grating, engineered to deliver unrivalled load-bearing performance. Manufactured using advanced automated production technology, AutoGrate provides enhanced strength over other moulded GRP gratings enabling more efficient and economical walkway designs.
For specifiers and installers, this improved performance can allow either longer unsupported spans (reducing substructures and installation time) or reduced panel depths. Independent testing by Lancaster University has confirmed AutoGrate’s significant strength advantage, making it the first choice for safety walkways and access structures in any environment.

The BM Open Mesh GRP grating range is a versatile option for industrial flooring and access routes. It provides excellent drainage and reliable slip resistance, making it suitable for wet and oily environments where pedestrian safety is critical.
This range is commonly used for walkways, platforms, stair landings, maintenance access routes and service areas across a wide range of sectors.

BM Mini-Mesh GRP grating is ideal where there is a need to reduce the risk of smaller items falling through the walking surface or for improved facilitation of wheeled traffic such as trollies or wheelchairs. It is particularly well suited to environments such as jetties and pontoons over water, raised industrial walkways above where people are working and public access ramps.

Designed to eliminate trip hazards at access points, our GRP Ramp Edges help improve pedestrian safety while maintaining a clean and professional finish to grating installations. The integral anti-slip surface ensures reliable traction even in wet or oily environments, making them suitable for demanding industrial, public and marine settings.
Manufactured in high-visibility RAL 1003 (yellow), BM Ramp Edges are available to suit 19 × 19mm and 38 × 38mm mesh sizes and 22mm, 30mm and 38mm panel depths, ensuring compatibility with common grating specifications. Other types and colours are available on request.

BM Solid Top panels are manufactured using standard open mesh grating with an added 3mm gritted plate or a chequer plate finish, providing a continuous durable and slip-resistant surface.
They provide a level surface for foot or wheeled traffic and offer approximately 50% higher stiffness values than that of open mesh grating.
Ideal applications include walkways above open conveyors, tanks or vats to prohibit contamination, especially in the food processing industry, or where narrow heels may present a tripping hazard with standard open mesh.

Smooth GRP grating provides the same corrosion-resistance and long-life benefits of standard open mesh grating but with a non-gritted surface finish. This grating is typically selected for applications where a smooth finish is required for cleaning, hygiene or operational reasons, such as fencing applications.
Where slip resistance is critical, we recommend gritted options; however, smooth grating can be appropriate for controlled environments or specialist applications such as vertical screening.

GRP stair treads deliver the same safety and durability benefits as GRP open mesh grating in a ready-to-install stair tread format. With a gritted slip-resistant surface and optional high visibility nosing, they provide a safe, reliable solution for new and replacement industrial staircases.
Stair treads are commonly specified in rail, construction, utilities, marine and industrial environments where corrosion resistant and low maintenance walkways are essential.
